What is Haiku LMS?

Haiku LMS is a lesson-centric learning management system built to bring the advantages of the web to your students and classes. We created Haiku LMS around the idea that your content should be your focus. We believe that Haiku LMS is the most elegant way to extend your teaching onto the web, bar none.

The Company & the Community

A tech startup based in Goshen, Indiana, Haiku Learning Systems was born in early 2006. From day one we've focused on creating content-centric learning software. We're about the message, not the medium. We continue to evolve Haiku LMS to meet our users' needs. Here's a brief history of what we've done:

  • December 2006: Version 1.0 launches
  • June 2007: Version 2.0 launches
  • Summer 2008: Version 3.0 launches, featuring embedded content
  • Summer 2009: Version 4.0 launches, bringing more info within fewer clicks via the Portal and NavBar

Work is well under way for on the features for the rest of 2009-2010. You can even get a glimpse of our current development roadmap.

What We believe

Simplicity

We believe in a lightweight and streamlined software application that follows our rule of the essential 80%. We believe that trying to provide a feature set that serves everyone ends up producing a complicated and bloated software experience.  We choose our features with an eye to the essential and an ear to our users' feedback.

We believe that Haiku LMS should require little to no training.  Users familiar with web interfaces should be able to pick up Haiku LMS and be using it in minutes.  Our goal is to make it possible for teachers to maintain a vibrant classroom website for under 10 minutes of work per week.

Harmony

We believe in working closely with teachers to create an environment that enhances the classroom and the teaching-learning experience.

We believe that the best way to serve the education community is to listen closely to what educators need and to respond accordingly.  We do this through close partnerships with our users.

Community

We believe that the Internet provides a means of efficient, affordable (in many cases free!) information exchange between teachers, parents, and students.  We want to help that happen through quality software.

We believe that the use of Haiku LMS should be free for basic users.  More advanced and sophisticated users pay a minimal fee that pays our bills.
Haiku LMS would not be possible if it wasn't for the many volunteers helping Haiku grow and evolve.

How we do it

  • We offer a hosted, on-demand service because we believe that many can benefit from the use of off-site services.  This is because:
    • It lessens the load on often overburdened tech staff
    • It allows many districts to pool resources, thus reducing costs
    • It allows for instant distribution of new features based on the suggestions of our users.

Harmony. Simplicity. Community.
